Ever since the beginning of the modern times, a fresh upsurgein compiling the Dazangjing (or Tats’angching) has been ushered inwith the deepening of people’s knowledge of Buddhism. And whilethe electronic publication is[A3]developing【CB】,develping【藏外】developingrapidly nowadays, the appealfor editing[A4]a photoelectric【CB】,aphotoelectric【藏外】a photoelectricedition of the Dazangjing, at home andabroad, has become more and more powerful. Under such circumstances, the Bureau of Religious Affairs of the State Council presidedover a “Symposium on the Compilation of the Dazangjing and Its[A5]Computerization【CB】,Compu terization【藏外】Computerization” (“Symposium on the Dazangjing Project”) in Beijingfrom April 9 to 10, 1996. Present at the conference were nearly40[A6]eminent【CB】,emi nent【藏外】eminentexperts and monks from both the academic and religiouscircles in Beijing. The participants spoke out freely and, from variousangles, proved up to the hilt the importance, necessity and feasibilityof compiling a new Dazangjing which would be able to embodythe supreme learning level of the Chinese nation. The convening ofthis important meeting marked the beginning of a new historical periodin the undertakings of compiling the Dazangjing. And since toserve the compilation of the Dazangjing is the fundamental aim ofourBuddhist Texts Not Contained in the Tripitaka, we editorshere would like to warmly congratulate the participants on the successfulconvention of this symposium. With the agreement of thesponsor of the symposium, we have here selected 11 papers by theparticipants and edited the remainder speeches and papers given atthe symposium as “Excerpts of Speeches.” By arranging all this as aspecial issue in the second number of our book, we expect that personagesof various social circles could pay close attention to this eventand join the discussion. According to the layout of ourBuddhistTexts Not Contained in the Tripitaka, research papers, as a rule, are arranged behind the Buddhist literature itself. However, it isclear that such an event as the Symposium on the Dazangjing Projectshould draw wider attention and support from people; there fore, weput this group of papers at the beginning of this number of ourbook. It is worth mentioning that an international academic symposiumon the same topic was also convened at the Foguangshan Hill inTaiwan in the first[A7]ten-day【CB】,tenday【藏外】ten-dayperiod of last April. All this proves fullythat the international community as well as both sides of the TaiwanStraits are very concerned with this great cause.
The main contents of the second number ofthe Buddhist TextsNot Contained in the Tripitakaare as follows:
The column “Chan Texts from Dunhuang” of this number publishtwo Chan texts from Dunhuang, viz.the Qizu Fabao Jiand theTianzhuguo Putidamo Chanshi Lun.
The Qizu Fabao Jiis such a peculiar Chan text that the wholeof it is composed of quotations and citations, and is therefore equalto theZhu Jing Yao Ji.Previously, people all said that China’sChan School “has not followed any sutra or abhidharma, and has nowritten works.” Nevertheless, the Qizu Fabao Jiis not[A8]only【CB】,noly【藏外】onlyawritten work, but also has followed some sutras and abhidharmas. As a matter of fact, the author put forth and proved his own doctrineupon the basis of some scriptures throughout the text. It wasnever recorded before and has been discovered in the Beijing[A9]Library【CB】,Lib rary【藏外】Libraryof late. NO.1 of the two parts of the text has been preserved in theBeijing Library since it was brought to the city from Dun huang, and has failed to be appraised and published; another number of thetext had once drifted outside and was finally under the care of thesame library, and has been kept there up to now. Originally, bothnumbers were of the same fascicle, and it is to be regretted thatsome parts in between have been missing, and therefore they cannotbe straightly joined together. The colophon at the end of the secondnumber names it as the “xiajuan” (“concluded fascicle”, viz. the secondof two or the last of three, according to the layout characteristicsof Chinese publications) of the text; therefore, the original workshould have two or three fascicles. And it is hard to identify whothis Qizu (the Seventh Guru) was now. However, it seems to methat he should belong to the Northern Chan School, according to theideological inclination in the text. The Tianzhuguo PutidamoChanshi Lunhas already been published in the first number oftheBuddhist Texts Not Contained in the Tripitaka. As the explanatorynote on the title of the text therein says, it is commonplace forBuddhist scriptures to be supplemented with new contents or undergotransmutation while being copied. If any different versions of atext do appear during its[A10]dissemination【CB】,dissmimation【藏外】dissemination, these versions should be collatedrespectively. However, it is[A11]relatively【CB】,re latively【藏外】relativelycomplicated whethersome texts should be regarded as the different versions. Consequently, after the different versions of the text have been edited andmerged into one in the first number of our book, we are here to collateits two different versions[A12]individually【CB】,in dividually【藏外】individuallyin this very number, which is in our opinion a new experiment in collating such texts. Wesincerely welcome any[A13]criticism【CB】,cri ticism【藏外】criticismin this aspect.
The column “Commentaries on the Tripitaka” brings forth twotexts:the Jing Ming Jing Ji Jie Guan Zhong Shuandthe Fa HuaJing Wen Wai Yi.
The Jing Ming Jing Ji Jie Guan Zhong Shu, collected byDaoyein the Tang Dynasty (618907), is a comparatively importantone of the extant commentaries onVimalakirtinirdesasutra. Anumber of[A14]versions【CB】,ver sions【藏外】versionsof this commentary have been found among thesurviving books from Dunhuang. It drew research workers’ attentionlong ago and has been collected into the 85th volume oftheDazhengzang. Unfortunately, the commentary included intheDazhengzanglacked accurate and comprehensive collation, and morethan 10 thousand Chinese[A15]characters【CB】,charac ters【藏外】charactersfrom the latter half of the fifthPin (chapter) to the first half of the[A16]seventh【CB】,sventh【藏外】seventhpin have been missing;therefore, the publication of the collated text here is in fact the firsttime for the[A17]complete【CB】,com plete【藏外】completetext of the commentary to see the light ofday. The[A18]commentary【CB】,commen tary【藏外】commentary, consisting of two fascicles, is fairly[A19]lengthy【CB】,lenghthy【藏外】lengthy. As a result of the limited space of this number, we nowjust bring forth the first fascicle, and the second one will come intobeing in the third number of our book.
Also sifted out from the[A20]surviving【CB】,suriving【藏外】survivingbooks from Dunhuang istheFa Hua Jing Wen Wai Yi,a commentary onthe Fahuajing (Saddharmapundarikasutra). The author of this text is unknown, forhe has never been recorded in any catalogs of the Buddhist Canonthrough the ages. The[A21]original【CB】,origional【藏外】originaltext is now kept in the ShanghaiMuseum. As the title of the text suggests, it lays no stress onstraightening out the words and phrases ofthe Fahuajing. Instead, drawing forth a number of questions fromthe Fahuajing, the authorgave them[A22]specific【CB】,spe cific【藏外】specificexpositions in his text, from which one canget a hint of the major questions and theoretical tendencies with regardto the then studies ofthe Fahuajing. Copied in 545 A.D.during the reign of the Western Wei Dynasty, the manuscript haspreserved considerable ancient forms of Chinese characters used inthe period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and the wordingand phrasing therein are slightly of colloquial flavor; therefore, it isof a certain value to any one who makes studies of the then languagesand characters.
The section “Important Texts from India” publishesthe Di YiZheng De Jing, a principal Indian Jain scripture in.
Jainism, the[A23]so-called【CB】,socalled【藏外】so-called“Niganth cult” in the Buddhist texts, isstill one of the very influential religious sects in India today. Jainismand Buddhism emerged in the same age and same place, and had followersof roughly identical social levels. As a result, both religionsshare many a common or similar point in their doctrines. To studyJainism is a must for any one who studies Buddhism, especially theearly Buddhism, which has become a common understanding in theBuddhist research circles in the world. It is a pity that no one in Chinahas ever translated a Jain scripture into Chinese in the past twothousand years except for some introduction in the Buddhist scriptures.Among the numerous Jain scriptures, only the Di Yi Zheng DeJing is one jointly revered and followed by two great sects, viz. theSvetambara and the Digambara, and it is also publicly accepted asthe most essential text dealing with the Jain doctrine, hence thetranslated version here. China’s Buddhists have had the tradition tocollect India’s cultic texts into the Dazang jing, such asChen Zhendi’s[A24]translation【CB】,traslation【藏外】translationofthe Suvarnasaptati Sastra, a work of ancient India’sSamkhya School, and the Tang monkXuan zang’s translationofDasapadarthasastra, a work of ancient India’s VaisesikaSchool, etc.. Following this tradition, we have included thisDi YiZheng De Jinginto ourBuddhist Texts Not Contained in theTripitakato offer it to our readers.
The section “Lost Pearls Regained” brings forththe Yu Jia ShiDi Lun Pi Xun Ji Xu, an important research paper by Mr. HanQing jing, a distinguished Buddhist scholar in modern times, in hislater years.
Tracing his own academic experience throughout his life in thispaper, Mr. Han Qingjing expounds the significance ofthe Yogacarabhumi Sastrain “carrying forward the essentials of authenticBuddhism.” Therefore, this paper can serve as important referencematerial for one to make studies of Mr. Han Qingjing’s thinking. Inaddition, the author points out in his paper that there are many errorsin writing in the Sanskrit original ofthe Yogacarabhumi Sastra. This really deserves our great attention, for the author has correctedthe mistakes passed on for more than one thousand years. It isindeed delighting and amazing for this important paper to be publishedfor the first time after it has gone through all kinds ofdisasters.
Dazangjing, an accumulation of China’s Buddhist essencesthrough generations, is a cultural treasure that we Chinese peoplehave contributed to the world. Since the Northern and Southern Dynasties, all the successive dynasties in China had maintained two traditions:one was to compile the Dazangjing, another one was towrite the official history, forming two grand humanistic views inparallel with each other in China’s history. Our country is now inits heyday again. If we can compile a new Dazangjing, we shall beable to benefit generation after generation. We sincerely hope thatwe Chinese people at home and abroad, the peoples of the countriesin the Chinese Buddhist cultural sphere, and personages of the Buddhistand academic circles, can all join hands and dedicate our selvesto the cause of compiling a new Dazangjing that can include our presentaccomplishments and set a fine example for posterity.
